So I'm a WoW player... and I found your blog. I was kind of interested with your take on WoW.

I did however start to notice that the stuff you were saying sounded very much like the spittle flecked rants I have with my friends after playing the game for too long. The Fisher-Price and bubble-wrap approach of the game. Everything is handed to you on a platter (more so lately).

The astoundingly moronic playerbase. The AOL speak.

I play on an RP server, and yeah, I felt like I could have written this article. Just with more profanity and spittle on the screen.

If you are finding these things new and unique to WoW, then it means they don't exist or aren't as common in the MMO that you play...

So... I'll behave and promise to use full sentences. Just please don't feed me to anything.

OMG if one more person says not to worry bout anything til end game content i'm gonna scream. Seriously people? What the hell is the point of a game, where the entire point is just the stuff at the end. If i've gotta troll out weeks of my time just to get to the fun part of the freeking game thats completely retarded. So no Dave, despite what these dipwads say, the game doesnt "start at 80". Sure you get access to a lot of things you didnt have yet, but with good friends you can do things that are just as fun at lower levels. The problem is FINDING those people as most people are so obsessed about being uber they will shank you in the back for a chance at that rare item that just dropped. I lucked out and found some really great people. I started on a RP server cause thats why i play these games and while i was sorely disappointed with the rp i did find (we have one of "those" goldshires...ick) it still relieved a lot of the pressure to be what everyone expected.

Salt, agreed. I played FFXI for 3 years, and once I went to WoW I just couldn't give up all of the extra features WoW has to offer. How free you are to level in many different ways, the PvP, the instances, mounts, professions... The fact that the game doesn't lag when you're around a lot of people doing an event or in a Main city. I remember Jeuno in FFXI, people didn't even load correctly at the Auction house, and Garrison? Oh god... that was awful. You couldn't even tell wtf was going on half of the time the lag was so terrible. And it was server based lag, so no matter what system you were playing on, Ps2, Xbox 360, or even a top notch PC, that game lagged to all hell when there were more than around 10 people near you. I just couldn't go back, and I tried a couple times, but FFXI just doesn't compare overall to WoW. I do have to say though, I miss "/propose" I loved making polls in /sh in the main cities. =P

But everywhere I read that it is impossible to do anything solo past level 10.

When I saw some video of a puppet master solo leveling by kiting and is near the blink of death the entire fight, the first thought that came to mind was
"OMG. You have got to be kidding me."

Sometimes I just don't feel like grouping - maybe I had a lousy day and don't feel like deal with people who may or may not be a bunch of morons.

Graphics wise... I'm going to blunt here.
I really don't see that large a gap if any between the 2.

They were both release in at around the same time period, hence are at the about the same technology level.

From what I can tell from videos and the FFXI tech demo, is that FFXI has a longer draw distance, but at the same time the local surrounding appear rather sparsely populated.
WoW is the opposite, although they have increase the max draw distance since 3.x.x.

WoW also has next to no zoning, you only zone when you ride on ships that go from one continent to another, when you hearth to an inn or when you enter an instance.

People really love to argue, but really, it's not that hard to see why more people play WoW.
I play both games and I can tell the major difference between when I play WoW vs FFXI:
The number of people I need to play.
WoW you can play from 1-80 alone. Obviously if you want to raid you need a group.
With FFXI you can level from 1-10 with any job, and maybe higher depending on job/skill/etc.
WoW isn't necessarily easier than FFXI, but finding a group is never that easy, in either game.
But there's no point in arguing which game is better. You like one game, you like the other, or you like both. There's certain things unique to each, and similar to both, you either love or hate them.

No Nummies, Blizzard said that they are making the graphics better for people who's computers can handle it, and all they have to do to do that is re-render the 3 models with a higher number of polygons, its how 3d modeling works, they didn't really create the characters originally to be square and have jagged edges, all they did was lower the amount of polygons in the 3d models so that people with horrible video cards and memory could still play the game, Square could easily do the same thing so that more people could play, but they haven't/don't. Also they're working on a new MMO. Galaxies of Starcraft? I sure hope so! =)

wtf? just because you put 3d graphics on something and up the res doesn't change the LOOK OF THE GAME. Its not suddenly going to become awesome looking going from 800 x 600 to 1072 x 1210 or whatever. Change the res all you want, all that is is the amount of pixels.

Just because they're both online games doesn't make them the same. Would you compare Chess with Civilization? They're both strategy games, yet they are very different. More people play Chess around the world, but that doesn't make it better then Civilization does it? Does the fact that there are different graphics for Chess, some much better then others(Heck, some in 3-D!) does that make it better then Civilization?

Sean that's not a proper comparison. Wal-Mart gets more business because with the economy as it is in the United States people need to buy things at lower prices. So more people shop there. Plus it can only be compared to other stores like it. And Stores like it with higher prices are going out of business or suffering because people need to save every penny unless they're upper middle class +. Though you can't compare Wal-Mart to the number of players choosing to play one video game over another they're not the same thing. Just as you can't compare Wal-Mart to a Salon or Nails store. They don't do the same business so you can't compare them just by the fact that they're "stores" to decide which is better or not. Wal-Mart sells cheap versions of everything pretty much, and just because they might have products for hair or clothes doesn't mean you can compare the store at a whole to being better than specialty shops that sell higher quality goods. And with Aol. It honestly doesn't have customers that know that there is something better. I know so many people that are not and never will be anything close to tech savvy. And those people usually fall into the older age groups. They don't know better so they use AOL. On the other hand, people that play MMO's "Gamers" are very much technology friendly. They play a number of videogames and they know what they like when they play it. In this case, the majority of people who enjoy and play MMO's choose WoW. That's why its the highest played and sold MMO at this current time. When something that appeals in a greater way comes out which it will enviably with time people will quit WoW and begin to play that game. It's just how it works. Though nothing has been able to kill WoW yet. Warhammer came out and claimed to be A WoW killer, so did Age of Conan, but low and behold, even though both games and FFXI, Liniage 2 and another number of MMO's out there, some which are free like Flyff, Maple Story, Rapplez etc. Have not been able to gather a higher amount of players or even come close to WoW. Also on a side note, Blizzard is in the progress of making higher res graphic settings for people who's computers can handle it. They just released a 3d mode that comes with 3d glasses. Look it up if you don't believe me.

I'd love to tell you which game is better, but this really is getting a bit old. They're both decent, I've played both, they're still games. You truly never waste anything playing either because you get entertainment. I find that to be a win. Harass anyone on this subject, but I find that its really huge opinions (and really long essays) that really don't help either game. I play FFXI because more friends and more interest because I like the rest of the series. Wow was interesting but my brother never liked it as much and didn't like it.

Master. Most of it doesn't suck, WoW players never said that most of it sucks. Actually there is a lot to do while leveling in WoW. What we mean by "the (real) game doesn't start until you reach cap", means that at cap you're able to do things, obtain things, take part in things, that you couldn't do while leveling. That doesn't mean leveling isn't fun. I had an absolute blast leveling my WoW character, it was great, I could do pvp even at a low level, I ran instances and got better gear, I bought pets, I joined guilds, I did world events and took part in holidays and the dark moon faire, I explored new areas and got rewards and levels for doing quests. I got new abilities as I grew in levels and used them against mobs and other players, defeating them and getting good at playing my character. Though everything that is fun at first doesn't compare to the amount of fun you have when you get to level cap. So that is what we mean by "The real game starts at cap/end game." Not that the rest isn't fun, its just isn't "as" fun as the content that comes later on. Do you understand now?

Dxoh? You're point? If something is targeted to the masses so that a large some of people play and enjoy it, that's a bad thing? (Or did you mean FFXI is only targeted to a select group? Either way you're incorrect.) Isn't the Final Fantasy series just like Warcraft? I've never met a gamer in my entire life that hasn't played or at least heard of Final Fantasy. Same goes for the Warcraft series. They both were targeted for mass amounts of people, and mass amounts of people have played both. The only difference between the too is (as goes for the MMO's) is that Blizzard did a better job to appeal to the masses than Square did. There for WoW is a much more successful MMO. Though you can't say that Final Fantasy wasn't attempting to do the exact same thing with their MMO. Of course they were, its Final Fantasy "XI" the 11th one. Their series had to appeal to the masses or they wouldn't have ever even tried to make an MMO to begin with. And low and behold, Blizzard did a better overall job with their franchise, which is why much more people play WoW then they do FFXI.

The newest content is far too easy, hopefully the next expac will be better. The entire "starts at endgame" used to be true with content which was a challenge. Hyjal, Black Temple and Sunwell. Now it's just a get to 80 and wait for ulduar.

But saying WoW is easier obviously came from people who never did the end game in BC.

After server first Kalc, wiping on muru for months on end and finally getting kil'jaeden after all that was indeed effing satisfying.

I won't bash FFXI, I haven't played it. But please don't do the same thing to WoW or take the comments of some retards either (anon).

I will say one thing though, after watching my friend play on FFXI, the graphics on WoW are substantially better.

I too hope Dave does a complete write up of his experience with WoW.
