Interestingly, MY guild master in WoW bought a character from a guildie who was quitting for a couple of hundred quid. And blizzard banned him. He took them to court and blizzard backed down and unsuspended the account. Apparently its because it constitutes renting a service and thus all the stuff in the ToC / eula becomes invalid legally.

You sign a contract which says that your character and any money or items attached to that character is owned by Square-Enix.

Square-Enix is, by law and by sense, allowed to do whatever the heck they want to do to characters, money, or items.

You pay them money because FFXI is a never-ending game. It's like buying a whole new game every 6 months. It has infinite replayability. That's why it costs money. If it didn't cost money, we would either have a really cruddy game, or we would have to buy in-game stuff anyway.

I find it funny that people still dont get that when they joined the game they, in effect, signed a contract. Going against the ToS violates said contract and SE reserves the right to do whatever they want.

I know in some games it's not necessarily the whole "i could sell my account for lots of money" sort of thing. When they bring up value, they tend to refer to the company as having lost a customer who can supply them continuously with money.
